My Inspiration

Good morning to one and all,

I, Ojasvi L from 4 A, would like to share a few lines about a great champion who inspired me a lot. Can you identify this picture? Yes, she is Chungneijang Mary Kom H Mangte,  popularly known as Mary Kom- one of India's leading female boxers for the last two decades . Mary Kom is from Imphal, Manipur. The Indian boxing Legend was born in the year 1983 .

Mary Kom started competing at the age of 18 and was the unbeatable champion in 2005, 2006,2008 and 2010 . Women’s world boxing championship was introduced in 2011 and she was the only Indian female boxer to win eight world championship medals . Kom was the only Indian female boxer to have qualified for the 2012 summer Olympics , competing in fly weight (51kg) category and winning a bronze medal. She has also been ranked as World’s  No1 female light fly weight by the International Boxing Association.

If we see her records, she has won  1 bronze in 2012 at the London Olympic games,    6 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze in World championship,  1 gold and 1 bronze in 2014  Asian games,  1 gold in 2018 Commonwealth games,    5 golds and 2 silvers in Asian championship.
The Indian Government honoured her with Padma Shri in 2006,  Padmabhushan in 2013 and  Padmavibhushan  in 2020 and she was also nominated as a member of Rajya Sabha in 2016.
In 2018, the Government of Manipur conferred on her the title (Meethoi Leima) translated as great or exceptional lady.

The International Amateur Boxing Association has given her a nickname “Magnificent Mary”. She has a biopic and Bollywood film based on her life. Kom is married to K. Onler Kom, who is a football player.Mary Kom is an inspiration to many of us. She fought her way through poverty, poor infrastructure, racism and favoritism. It’s not resources, but her passion for boxing which made her successful in reaching the heights of glory.

With this information I would like to end up here, but Mary Kom has no end.

Thank you

~Ojaswi L, 4 LS
